EMDR Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a specialized and structured psychotherapy method designed to help resolve symptoms and emotional distress caused by traumatic events and adverse life experiences.
Our minds can heal from psychological injuries like our bodies can heal after physical injury. EMDR uses eye movements, hand held buzzers, or sound during therapy sessions to help facilitate that healing quickly by working with both sides of the brain and preventing overwhelm and retraumatization.
When therapy is complete, clients experience relief from distress symptoms like:
- disturbing images or body sensations
- triggering sounds/smells/places
- nightmares
- intense emotions
- avoidance behaviors
- or restrictive beliefs
As trauma gets unstuck or is resolved, clients gain more freedom and new insight. Post traumatic growth is possible!
What Can EMDR Treat?
EMDR can be used to treat single event traumas like motor accidents, disasters, experiences of violence or sexual assault, or other exposure to trauma, and is found to be highly effective in treating painful childhood experiences and unmet needs.
It’s also used to work with anxiety, depression, phobias, as well as relationship trouble or attachment healing. Grief and complicated or prolonged grief can be treated and resolved with EMDR treatment.
EMDR can be a great option for working with creative blocks, relationship challenges, lowering performance anxiety and moving ahead with goals.
When the nervous system can let go of old experiences and restore a sense of safety, it has more room for joy, connection, and creativity.

EMDR Intensives might be for you if:
- You’re highly motivated to move on from your trauma
- You’re struggling to cope with the long wait between weekly sessions
- Your relationships or work is suffering because of your triggers, mood, or difficulty feeling secure
- You like working with and want to stay with your current therapist, but they don’t offer EMDR
- Carving out a few, larger chunks of time for therapy works better for your schedule than a weekly appointment. Missing work, arranging childcare and commuting each week can be a barrier.
- You live in an area where in-person EMDR isn’t available and want to travel for a focused time to work
Other Benefits to EMDR Intensives
- Reduces overall cost and time of therapy
Though the upfront cost seems to be more, moving through traumatic material deeply and quickly can speed up the overall time needed in therapy and overall total session cost. - Eliminate the time spent to “catch up” from the week or the temptation to focus on weekly problems that distract from your primary trauma work.
- Childcare arrangements for less days
- Less commute time
